Machiavelli's The Prince


Niccolo` Machiavelli was an Italian born in Florence in 1469, growing up in the ‘golden age’, during the rule of Lorenzo. His father was a Florentine lawyer, coming from a family with old fashioned values and middle class stature.
In 1498, at the age of thirty, Machiavelli was appointed secretary and Second Chancellor to the Florentine Republic; working mostly at diplomatic responsibilities, administration and running military errands. Machiavelli felt very strongly that Florence needed a militia of it’s own, rather than rely on mercenary troops or the help of allies. Machiavelli was imprisoned and tortured, for suspect of conspiring against the new rulers, only later to be acquitted and released.
Later Machiavelli had a brief return to public life when he received a grant from Pope Clement of Rome, for writing his History of Florence. Machiavelli died in 1527, leaving his family, according to his son, in poverty.

In The Prince, Machiavelli offered a monarchical ruler advice designed to keep that ruler in power. It’s main theme is that princes should retain absolute control of their territories, and they should use any means of expediency to accomplish this end, including deceit. To liberate Italy from the influence of foreign governments, Machiavelli explains that strong indigenous governments are important.
