Malcolm Little

, the son of Louise and Earl Little, grew up in the town of Harlem. It was a town like most other towns in the late fifties, blacks having there own drinking fountains, restroom, sections on the bus and so on. He grew up watching Earl Little, his father fight for the right of his people. He had been taken to U.N.I.A. meetings where he had heard his father give many speeches and he knew about the issues in which a black man faced.

about his career choices. At the age of fourteen he moved to Boston to live with his sister, Ella. He was impressed by the blacks on the street, the clothes they wore, how proud they were, and the city of Boston it self. He met a man named Shorty who helped him learn the ropes of the street life and to get a new image. Shorty also got Malcolm a shoe shining job. Malcolm was basically living on the streets, and this is where he got the nick name Detroit Red. In his late teen years he was arrested for burglary. A white man for the same crime would have served two years in jail at the most, but Malcolm received eight to ten years of hard labor.
While in jail he read as many books as possible and took all the English classes given. Malcolm's brother Reginald exposed him to the Nation of Islam, a religious group seeking the stop of segregation and discrimination. The Nation of Islam was headed by Elijah Muhammad. Muhammad wrote to Malcolm describing the Islamic religion to him. ...
