Abstract

There has been substantial study performed on the marriage relationship; what makes one successful and another fail are among the most recent studies. Researchers and therapist have sought to gain insight on the causes of divorce; which are half of all marriages in the United States. Research shows that a lack of intimacy between couples is a major cause of the breakdown and eventual end of the marriage. Miriam Webster (1998) defines intimacy as: 1) the state of being intimate: familiarity 2): something of a personal or private nature and from this we can infer that for intimacy to occur there must be some knowledge of the self (familiarity, personal) and acceptance of this self (state of being). Briggs (1975) informs us that our perception of who we are may not be accurate, but the closer that our self image is to the real self, the more genuine we will live out our lives. In order to know one self, we must know our needs, desires, and emotions. John Powell (1998) states, “People who have explored and experienced themselves are aware of the vitality of their senses, emotions, mind, and will” (p. 28). To have these needs, know them, and accept them as good for us is the fulfillment of intimacy. John Bradshaw (1990) boldly states that “It is impossible to be intimate if you have no sense of self” (p.18). ...

God then created the animals, but none of them fit Adam’s relationship needs.
