Often times, boys will downplay emotional qualities in order to maintain their masculinity, which makes it difficult to build emotional connections and meaningful relationships.
In addition, the large emotional burden that males carry costs them the ability to maintain mental stability. As it isn’t normalized for males to share their emotions, they often times build up and turn into anger. As anger is normalized in men, this can lead to aggressive or unwarranted behaviors. According to Dr. William Pollack, a psychologist and educator, boys are not encouraged to talk about any type of pain, whether it is social, mental, or emotional pain. Boys are taught to downplay these emotions, and act as though they are “okay” even when they are struggling or hurt.
