Monks And Today's Society


The strict ideals taken by Christian Monasticism (Monks, etc.) are
quite different from those views or values that are taken in the modern day
United States. A majority of the United States citizens, today, are more
likely to have values that are opposite of those seen through the three
monastic vows (poverty, chastity, and obedience).
As a whole the inhabitants of these monasteries (Monasticism as a
whole) discipline themselves, through the three vows, in order to reach a
high spiritual purity. In other words, their strict discipline was to
obtain a closeness to God through their own purity. The three vows, which

In the modern day United States the dominant values are more along
the line of selfishness. It seems, for the most part, that the main values
in today's American society are, fulfilment of desires, and a rebelling
type lifestyle. Greed can be seen everywhere one turns; everyone is in
competition with others to see who can get the best clothes, biggest house,
or nicest car. It is a society based on more of "what can I have", than
"what can I give." Also, everyone has desires, but it seems like today
people will try to fulfill their own desires no matter whom they hurt. If
someone sees a woman with whom they would like to have a relationship, in
most cases they would try to have that relationship even if the woman was
in one of her own. Lastly, the society is based on rebellious acts, which
