Self-determination

To ensure that the nation-state controls its own destiny.

The importance of self-determination includes domestic issues such as balancing national unity with the desire for nations within the country to pursue their own status and identity. For foreign policy, countries are concerned with recognizing and protecting other county's sovereignty.

How Nation-States Respond to the World

In terms of international relations, nation-states can take one of the five following approaches.

Isolationism

A policy of "staying out" of world affairs. You "isolate" yourself from involvement with other countries.

Example - the United States were isolationist during the first few years of the Second World War. They saw it as a European war and not their problem.
