by hiding in a Polish convent for four years, an experience that drove her insane. She is torn between her identity as a Jew and as a Roman Catholic, sometimes using her Jewish name, Shula, and sometimes her Catholic name, Slawa. Shula went to Israel and married Eisen, another mad survivor. After Eisen began beating Shula, Sammler rescued her, and they both returned to New York.
Mr. Sammler is a voyeur character. He silently watches other people and gets pleasure out of observing them. This is evident throughout the novel, him watching the pickpocetter and he spends a lot of time thinking and describing women's bodies and clothes. He is an observer who prefers not to participate in life. Yet Sammler is an intellectual who has been injured both physically and psychologically; he has lost the vision in one eye and emotionally isolated himself from society.
