Other than adrenaleukodystrophy (ALD), diseases such as multiple sclerosis and transverse myelitis are also involved with the loss of myelin. Normally the human body can detect myelin deterioration and can recover, but in some cases, such as multiple sclerosis, the body’s immune system becomes confused and sees the myelin as an invader and then tries to destroy it as if it was a virus and when myelin is damaged it causes the impulses for transmissions to slow down therefor creating disabilities. In other cases, such as Lorenzo’s condition, myelin loss can be caused by the absence of the protein that breaks down, or metabolizes, the very long-chain fatty acids, which leads to build up that eventually will cause damage to the human body.
