"The Birthmark," by Nathaniel Hawthorne and "The Mortal Immortal" by Mary Shelley are stories that deal with mystery and love. The predominant theme in each story focuses on the dangers of unexplored science. Additionally, both authors employ elements setting, mood, plot, and character to enhance their themes. This paper will examine how Hawthorne and Shelley use these techniques to craft incredible stories.

The laboratory of Cornelius is associated with darkness and failure, as we are told, "Experiment after experiment failed, because one pair of hands was insufficient to complete them: the dark spirits laughed at him for not being able to retain a single mortal in his service" (Shelley). Additionally, when Wenzy does decide to work under Cornelius, he does so begrudgingly. On the other hand, Aylmer's laboratory is designed to be pleasing for Georgiana. For instance, we are told, "The scene around her looked like enchantment . . . The walls were hung with gorgeous curtains, which imparted the combination of grandeur and grace that no other species of adornment can achieve" (605).
