Native American Advocates

Throughout history, Native Americans faced unspeakable times with many in this nation bestowing upon them mass bloodshed nothing short of genocide. While the Natives endured such atrocious times, they had the abetment of a few advocates who addressed various issues on their behalf. These issues included fighting for their protection against slavery, fighting against the confiscation of their land, and writing great works in hopes to educate people about the Natives. Among these great advocates were Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca, Roger Williams, Cotton Mather and Ben Franklin.

De Vaca became a protector of the Natives, and was arrested by Diego de Alcaraz for “becoming openly critical” of Alcarez’s slave practices. Upon his return to South America, De Vaca had hoped to “enact an enlightened American Indian Policy”. Before doing so, however, he was removed from office and banished from America.
