The Indian Self Determination Act and Education Assistance Act of 1975. This act allowed the government to enter into contracts with, and makes grants directly to, federally recognized Indian tribes. This gave tribes the authority to now be able to operate their own schools. Teachers do not have the proper tools to teach such as books and computers. The teachers often have low morale when it comes to teaching the students. This in turn affects the ability of the student to learn.
The boarding School era has a lasting effect on Native American students today. The children were forbidden to speak their native language, they were brutalized emotionally, psychologically, physically and spiritually. The trauma of shame, fear and anger that Native American students faced in the boarding school era has passed from one generation to the next.
