The Nature of God According to George Berkeley

George Berkeley's view of God is closely related to the theories he constructed around the human perception of reality. For Berkeley, everything in the external world is based upon the spiritual world. Indeed, according to this philosophy, there is no reality beyond the spiritual. What is perceived as physical reality is actually the spiritual world communicating ideas as physical substance.
Berkeley furthermore explains this view by means of his belief in spirits inhabiting the spiritual world. Human beings are primarily finite spirits, all subject to the infinite, Supreme Spirit, which is God. Berkeley's view is based upon his desire to ease the spiritual turmoil of his time.
