Night by Elie Wiesel: A Review

Elie Wiesel's story NIGHT is an accounting of his later childhood in Hungary and how he and his family ended up transported to German concentration camps. The book is emotional and moving although Wiesel does not use emotional words or phrases. His simple language and matter-of-fact approach remind the reader of just how ordinary the horrible things he and his family went through became.
The story also reflects a personal journey Elie Wiesel took as all these events took place. At the beginning of the book, he tends to look down on people less fortunate than he, a view shared by those around him. When Elie asks for a teacher to help him lean this, his father tells him that there are no Cabbalists in Sighet and that another great writer, Maimonides, says to not study the Cabbala until one is at least thirty, but to focus on more traditional works first.
But there is a Cabbalist in Sighet -- Moshe' the Beadle. Moshe the Beadle is the janitor at the temple, and no one takes him seriously. He is clumsy, timid, and worst of all, poor. People pay him no mind. Elie gets to know him, however, and discovers that Moshe' studies the Cabbala and is willing to help Elie study it also.
So Elie's life as a twelve-year-old is fairly normal for a young Jewish boy in his town. The war seems very far away from their small town, until Nazis come to power in the Hungarian government. Still the Jews in Singhet are not concerned.

Nazis will stay in Budapest. They know the Nazis are harassing Budapest Jews, however, and within three days, there are German Nazi soldiers in Singhet. The soldiers are very polite at first to the Jews, and that convinces most in Singhet that they have nothing to worry about from these soldiers.
Even when the Nazis impose ghetto life on the Jews they still remain calm. By this time Elie has suggested to his father that they flee Singhet and go to Palestine, but his father says he is too old to leave. Through all of this, the Jews of Singhet keep their humanity, treating each other with respect and dignity.
