'Odysseus is a great hero, but a shocking leader.'

It is true to say that Odysseus is undoubtedly a great hero; the stories of his heroic feats such as the cunning defeat Cyclops, his crew getting turned into pigs by Circe, the deadly Scylla and Charybdis, the seductive Sirens and just his achievement at reaching the Underworld r Odysseus a truly respectable hero to the Ancient Greeks, as well as us today. However, at times we may doubt his skills in leadership despite his heroism. After all, what a true hero required at the time was a confirmed ‘kleos’ , which did not necessarily involve being a good leader.

However, it can equally be argued that he is a worthy leader in this episode seeing as he is constantly thinking of ways to help all of his crew escape, not just himself. He involves the whole of his crew in his plan to escape the Cyclops; they help him drive the sharpened pole into the Cyclops’ eye and he allocates lambs for them to hide under when they are on their way out, saving the last for himself to ensure that everyone gets out safely. Instead of killing the Cyclops rashly as others might do, he knows that killing the Cyclops will not do them any good seeing as the stone barring the entrance is too large for them to move. He thinks of a plan swiftly before the Cyclops kills any more of his men to allow the majority of them to escape safely, ...
