Summary

When the old man is being towed away by the fish, he begins to consider what he should do to help stop the fish from continuing to do what it is doing. He starts to think he should "make the line fast", but he realized that the end result of doing so could be bad. He had considered possibilities as to what he should do to stop the fish before he acted. He did this in order to prevent himself from making matters worse.

Summary

In the midst of trying to catch a fish, the old man begins to admire the bubbles in the water. He finds it interesting as to how the turtles eat the bubbles and their contents. The old man finds pleasure in the small things by admiring something as simple as a turtle eating a bubble.

"The iridescent bubbles were beautiful. But they were the falsest thing in the sea and the old man loved to see the big sea turtles eating them. The turtles saw them and approached them from the front, then shut their eyes so they were completely carapaced and ate the filaments and all.
