The article by Svavar Hrafn Svavarsson discusses Catullus 49, in regards to whether or not Catullus was sincere or ironic in his many thanks to Cicero. Many scholars have varying suggestions on the topic, and the article gives the opinions of both sides as well as discussing its own side. Because irony is such a vague term and can be interpreted in many different ways, Catullus 49 should not be taken at face value, but rather examine all possible meanings.

so Catullus’ use of them may have been mocking Cicero. The use of the third person show a solemnity and formality, indicating ironic detachment.
Personally, I agree with the author. There is overwhelming evidence to support that fact that Catullus had a sarcastic tone in the poem, Catullus 49. Catullus’ character and who he was as a person makes me believe that he would never downgrade himself in such a way and put Cicero above him. In earlier poems, readers have seen Catullus downplay his writing, for example in his dedication. He wrote dedicating his humble little book, but it was clear that it was something he was extremely proud of. Due to this, it is hard to believe that Catullus did not write Catullus 49 to actually praise Cicero. Although I agreed with the author from the start, Svavarsson gave even more evidence than what my own original proof was.
