Josianne was diagnosed with uterine cancer a year and a half ago, prompting a hysterectomy and subsequent radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Because the success rates for treatment of her particular cancer seemed relatively high, her friends and loved ones remained hopeful that Josianne, too, would be among the nearly 75% who survived the ordeal. Josianne, a lawyer in her late forties, was the most optimistic and didn't for a second feel that death was near. I personally witnessed Josianne undergo all the states of dying outlined in the book by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, On Death and Dying, watching her progress from initial shock and despair to eventual calm acceptance. The stage at which she lingered the longest and which became a relative problem for her as well as her loved ones was denial. In the first stages of her illness, when it seemed that she might actually have a better-than-average chance of survival, denial didn't seem to be a problem for anyone. Sure, we were afraid that cancer automatically equaled death but because the doctors told her that 75% of the patients who were treated showed no signs of cancer, we all felt that Josianne would be alright.
When we found that indeed she was one of the few for whom treatment did not work, the true nature of denial set in for both Josianne and her loved ones. After it was discovered that the cancer spread to her colon the colostomy left Josianne bed-ridden and weak. ...
