The reader is never given a moment's respite to look away from Iago's progress as he pushes Othello towards tragedy and more fundamentally, towards his downfall.

Shakespeare uses dramatic irony to expose Iago and his venomous and disruptive nature. Iago wears a facade that succeeds in fooling Othello, he warns him of the dangers of jealousy, referring it to the "green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on". This is shockingly, perhaps even comically, ironic as the villain, whilst warning the "moor" of becoming jealous, is himself a character fueled solely by envy and professional jealousy. Not only is Iago spurred by a keenly felt jealousy but to an Elizabethan audience most likely appeared foolish, immature, despite his skillful manipulation, and indeed an unaware victim of this "monster" he warns Othello of.
