Much research has been done on eyewitness testimony, for example Loftus, List, Poole et al etc.
Loftus (1975) showed some participants a film of events leading up to a car accident. After they had seen the film, they were divided into two groups – control and experimental. The control group was asked questions consistent with what they had seen (“How fast was the white sports car going when it passed the stop sign?”) while the experimental group was given some misleading information (“How fast was the white sports car going when it passed the barn while travelling along the country road?”) all the participants were then asked more questions about the film. In another experiment by Loftus and Palmer (1974), participants were shown film of a car accident. They were asked a series of questions about the events leading up to the car accident. One crucial question concerned the speed of the car on impact. One group was asked “How fast were the cars going when they hit each other?” Other groups were asked the same question, but the verb, in each case, was changed to either ‘smashed’, ‘bumped’, ‘collided’ or ‘contracted’. Loftus and Palmer founded that the verb used significantly affected speed estimates – ‘smashed’ produced the highest estimate and ‘contracted’ produced the lowest estimate.
