What does it man to be overpopulated? To some it means living in a world with more than 1 billion people. By that standard, we would have been overpopulated in the mid 19th century. should be defined as a situation where it is impossible to provide everyone on the earth a standard of living that is at a normal level.
Most people don't think that a population growth of 1 or 2 percent a year is a big deal, well small percentages add up very quickly. The current population of the world today is 5.7 billion, with an annual growth rate of 1.5%. At this rate, 88 million people will be added to the population this year alone. the continous production of adequate food supply is directly dependent on land, water, and energy. As the population increases, so does the amount of resources needed. Even though they are not depleted, they are declining at a significant rate because they are divided by such a large number.
Fertile cropland is also a big concern. The world's cropland per capita has been declining, the shortages of croplands combined with decreasing land productivity is a major reason why there is food shortages and human malnutrition. Fossil energy is another major resource used in food production. Intensive farming technologies of many developed countries use massive amounts of fossil energy such as fertilizers and pesticides. Because fossil energy is such a limited resource, it is depleting at a faster rate because of its need as the population rises.
