OVID AND SANSKRIT VERSES-NATURE OF LOVE

Ovid was certainly a highly gifted poet, capturing feeling of being in love quite skillfully but there is one flaw in his work. Most of his poems focus extensively on physical aspect of love thus failing to provide insight into emotional side that readers can more easily relate to. It is easier to describe physical love, but capturing true emotions is rather difficult and this is one skill that Ovid lacks. It appears that he can write endlessly on physical feelings associated with being in love but rarely focuses on how love affects our emotions. "How does this poet know about me or my personal problems" (8-9) still his focus on physical beauty of the beloved and his attraction to it alone cannot always be related to. It is easier for people to relate to emotional side of love since those feelings are more universal in nature whereas physical side of love is a personal matter that differs from one relationship to another. Read this line from Ovid's poems, "I don't live in the forest nor am I part horse/ but I find it hard to keep my hands off you."(Lines 9-10) and compare it to Sanskrit verses: "the villagers know that traveling/Away from someone we love/Is like dying" (page 559). Instantly one realizes that the speaker in the latter poem is more aware of true nature of love whereas Ovid appears rather obsessed with physical aspect thus ignoring the emotions completely.
