Prompt: Sometimes our sense of identity is stifled by the groups to which we belong.

Identity is not an easy part to determine for a person, different factors affect the creation and alterations of a person's identity. The way we grow up depends on the environment that we live in. One factor that creates the identity is the inheritance from parents in regards to culture, beliefs, and behaviour. The people around us affect the way we interpret things. They feel like they have to act the way their society acts to fit in with the society they are placed to belong to. They people surrounding us affects our behaviour towards others. As an example, the movie "Freedom Writers" shows how Ms. Gruwell's first impression towards her students. She firstly though about them as "African-Americans", "Whites", "Asians", etc. The movie also demonstrates how their appearance determine their group and therefore forcing them to believe and trust each other no matter the consequence that awaits them. If ever the group decides to change or modify their beliefs or label, the rest must follow to stay and the group and belong. The decision of a person is greatly affected by its group or society he/she belongs to. Every person needs to belong and feel belonged. However, this could also mean that by following their group or society, they would realise that it is them that must be the their own boss, thus giving them their identity, and their true meaning to belong.
