Politics in Animal Farm

The allegorical novel Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, is written in 1945 during the winding down of World War II. Around this point in history, communism in the Soviet Union, as a result of the Russian Revolution, begins to result in oppression and corruption. Orwell proposes the question of why corruption is inevitable if one does not reform their oppression for the right reasons. He attempts to answer this question through his example of the farm animals' society. Orwell depicts that corrupted revolution fails because of its unjust handlings of class structure, education, and language.

become so twisted and corrupted by the end, “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others” (Chapter 112). The swines benefit endlessly from the work of the other animals in the farm, and they become abundant with riches. Meanwhile, the ‘working class’ members of the farm, such as Boxer, labor tirelessly to ultimately remain in the struggle of poverty. Furthermore, those who realize the corruption at hand, such as Benjamin, can only be so cynical and powerless to change what is going on. Orwell connects these actions to the idea of revolution, and how the corruption of a pure idea was tainted and mangled by the greed of others in power.

The novel portrays that the corruption of education only leads to the oppressed becoming the oppressors. The pigs are chosen to lead the revolt as they are, “recognized as being the cleverest of the animals” (Orwell 35).
