Power And Gender Roles In The Hunger Games

In the novel `The Hunger Games' there are many kinds of power including gender and the capitol. The sources of power that I'm going to discuss are: The cornucopia, Peeta's sense of self, the career tributes and gender roles.

One of the abuses of power by the gamemakers is the cornucopia. A cornucopia is supposed to be a horn of plenty but in this case it is just a horn. The cornucopia did bring two things though, food and weapons but also a lot of deaths. If anyone tried to get to the cornucopia throughout the games for supplies, they were killed almost instantly by the career tributes. Hamitch didn't want Peeta or Katniss to go anywhere near the cornucopia at the start of the games ...

Peeta's sense of self is another form of power. He doesn't want the capitol to change him into a killer during the games which is rebellion because he is just going to try to be avoided and not kill anyone. `I don't want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I'm not'. (pg. 171) This shows that Peeta doesn't want to kill anyone and he doesn't want to just get pushed around by the capitol.

The career tributes are another form of power by districts one, two and four. The people in these districts are trained to fight and kill so that they will have more of a chance of winning the games. The districts aren't allowed to do anything to advantage them in the games or have any kinds of weapons which just put the career tributes at an advantage. `It's technically against the rules to train ...
