In some ways, the way the characters act towards others is good. Just as when Atticus decides to help with the Tom Robinson trial. “This case, Tom Robinson's case, is something that goes to the essence of a man's conscience—Scout, I couldn't go to church and worship God if I didn't try help that man.” (104) Atticus is helpful to Tom because he believes everyone should be treated. Atticus wants the town of Maycomb to change their views of black people and just begin to accept them. But some people are not willing to change, like Bob Ewell. “He stood up and pointed his finger at Tom Robinson. '–I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin' on my Mayella!'” (173) Even in a courtroom, Bob Ewell does not use Tom Robinson's name. Mr. Ewell uses profanity to describe Tom, even in front of a jury. Bob Ewell is angry about his situation in the town; stricken with poverty and living like an animal. He must take it out someone else, and that someone else is Tom Robinson.
