when falling in love with an aristocrat who has to overcome his own pride in order for his true integrity to shine through. Elizabeth is an exceptional, amusing and outspoken twenty-one year old girl who disagrees with many of the social views of her contemporaries. Elizabeth feels that marriages should be based on love, not on the financial or social benefits that it might yield. Because of this belief, Elizabeth refuses a marriage proposal from Mr. Collins, her father’s cousin who will someday inherit the Longbourn estate. When Collins later asks Elizabeth’s girlfriend Charlotte to marry him, she accepts his proposal. Elizabeth is astonished, horrified and disappointed by her friend's behavior because she knows that Charlotte does not love him. But Charlotte is more practical in her thinking than Lizzy.
