Humans are very self-centered by nature. It is our primitive side. When an infant is born, its first concern is for itself. It does not worry whether the mother is in any pain or if there are hungry people in the world. Instinct dictates these actions because in order for a being to survive, the priority of the creature needs to be itself. A wolf cannot help wolves that are weaker than it because it struggles to provide enough food and protection for itself. That is how primitive individuals needed to function in the harsh environment. Many people nowadays can afford to aid weaker nations such as Africa because, although their primary concern is still their own survival, they no longer have to consciously strive for it.
