Prison Gangs

Prison gangs have aroused in our prison systems for a number of reasons. First and foremost, prison gangs evolved for protection and control. Prison gangs hold a lot of control in the world of gangs. Street gangs hold a great deal of respect for those members that are in prison, and often times will send them money, and continue to include them in gang activities even with them in prison. Sadly, some street gang members respect those who are in prison so much that they aspire to be a prison gang member. and the Nuestra Familia represents Northern California. With that being said, it is clear that both of these gangs evolved from California. Both were started in prison by a small number of inmates. Both groups have ways of representing themselves in prison as well. The Mexican Mafia represent the number 13 because of the 13th letter of the alphabet is M. So for the Mexican Mafia they will tattoo M and 13 on them so they can be identified. For the Nuestra Familia, they do the same thing accept they used 14 and N for the same reason. These may seem like pointless ways of representation for us, but for these prison gangs, this is an extremely important part of gang life. Even with both gangs being from California and both being of Latino decent, they are still rivals. Both of them have looked to other gangs of other racial groups for extra protection.
