Before the American Civil war, in 1854 to the end of Reconstruction in 1877 a fraction of American politicians drew together to form a group called the “Radical Republicans” also know as the Radicals. They strongly opposed slavery during the war and after the war, distrusted ex-Confederates and demanded harsh policies for Reconstruction. Radicals, believing lincoln was moving far to slow with his efforts in freeing slaves and supporting their legal equality, made their move after the elections in 1866 .
