Ramona Mercer spent most of her career in labor and delivery, postpartum, and newborn nurseries. Mercer became intrigued with the transformation from giving birth to acquiring the maternal role. Mercer realized that simply delivering a child does not necessarily make a mother, but several variables that occur after birth play a large role in this complex process, and these variables can affect the bond between a mother and her child (Husmillo, 2013, 46). cues for the infant. The third phase is the settling into a new normal life as the baby becomes part of the family dynamic and everyday life for the parent or parents. The final phase is the achievement of maternal identity. This phase usually happens around four months of age. This is usually when a mother is confident in her abilities to take care of the child.
I chose this theory and this theorist because I believe that relationship between a mother and her child is very important. This theory is useful in a lot of settings in the healthcare field. This theory is simple to apply to everyday nursing practice and helps mothers and their babies. The theory is useful in providing care at the bed side and out of the hospital. The theory is also very user friendly and is suitable to maternity practice in general.
