Record Holders

The ultimate goal of every athlete is to win a championship, but
better than that is to be a recorded holder. Every athlete plays the game
to win a title whether it be the Stanley Cup, Lombardi trophy, or a MVP.
This is what athletes strive for. Yet, when it’s all said and done, only
the best will leave the game owning records. There are many sports and
many records, but only a few are really worth talking about. Those that
are notable are Joe DiMaggio’s hitting streak, Cal Ripkins consecutive
games played, and Cy Young’s many pitching records. The person that
dominates the record book is Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky in particular holds
every record there is in the National Hockey league. ...

broke all these records? Is it because of the longer seasons or the
changing of the rules. Maybe they just aren’t as good, or as talented.
This applies to almost every record except, the homer record. In the 1998
season both Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire broke Roger Maris’s 37 year old
record for most homers in a season. They rose to the occasion and brought
a sport that was slowly dying back on the map. Records like these are what
makes sports so much fun and interesting to watch and follow.

The greatest baseball record isn’t Mark McGwire’s 70 homers, but
the incredible hitting streak held by Joe DiMaggio. Joe DiMaggio exploded
with drama and energy when he launched his hitting streak. It started on a
dreary afternoon in Yankee Stadium on May 15, 1941, and wouldn’t end for
two months. He ended the streak at 56-games. DiMaggio’s streak ended only

Games. He was probably the greatest player to play in the 20th century.

as Mr. Cy Young. No one pitcher was such a work horse as Cy Young. Cy
Young held many records throughout his lengthy career of, twenty-two major
league seasons(1890-1911). His records include career wins 511, career
complete games with 750, and innings pitched with 7356, which is over 1400
more than his closes rival. Season after season Young was a dominating
