A REVERSAL OF REPRESENTATION

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the books "Heart of Darkness," by Joseph Conrad and "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe. Specifically, it will discuss how Chinua Achebe reverses the representation of Africa and Africans offered in "Heart of Darkness?" Conrad represents the natives in his book "Heart of Darkness" as savage beasts, who need to be tamed by the Belgium colonials. They are terrified of the white man and his cruelties. In contrast, the Ibo of Achebe's novel want to get along with the white man, and they pay for it in the end.

They are treated as savages, and so they become more savage, attacking the Europeans and holding on to their land the only way they know how. In retaliation, the colonials fight back, driving the natives away from their homes, and in the end, destroying their culture.
