Evil is more than a word or a symbol and is more than a myth converted to reality. Evil is an entity that involves our human society and is the voice of misguided reason in our minds that speaks to us all in moments of despair and desperation. In the fictional story "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, good and evil are represented throughout as symbols. The name "Goodman" implies simple innocence, and then he uses "Brown" suggesting common absence of purity in the character. The author follows with this idea within the opening paragraph; "Young Goodman Brown came forth at sunset into the street at Salem village; but put his head back, after crossing the threshold, [HYPERLINK: javascript:void(0);] to exchange a parting kiss with his young wife.
