Whittaker Chambers was born in 1901 and grew up in Long Island.
The book that had the greatest impact on him was Les Miserables. It taught
him that Christianity and revolution are two seemingly irreconcilable
things. After going to Columbia University he went to England, where he
joined the Communist party. There, he became the chief editor of the Daily
Worker. In 1938, he broke with the Communist party. In the Communist
party children were viewed as only a distraction that would hamper his more
important work. Therefore, abortions were commonplace in party life.
Chambers looked upon abortion with "physical horror". His wife got
pregnant and she begged him not to have an abortion. ...

Chambers was led through his own reverence back to his Christian roots. He
began working with Time magazine in 1939 and rose to the level of senior
editor. Over a decade later he was brought to court on account of his past
Communist connections. He identified former State Department official
Alger Hiss as one of the Communist who had supplied him with documents to
be turned over to Communist agents. Hiss was indicted and sentenced to
prison. Chambers showed reverence to God by not making his wife have an
abortion and by seeing God's plan through his daughter.
Reverence is the attitude which can be designated as the mother of
all moral life, for in it man first takes a position toward the world which
opens his spiritual eyes and enables him to grasp values. Therefore, it is
the mother of the moral life inasmuch as it allows a person to recognize
