The Hatchet by Gary Paulson is an adventure about a young boy's survival in the Canadian wilderness. Brian, the protagonist in the story is faced with many challenging situation that require maturity and strength. Paulson's book thrives on themes of survival, courage, self-discovery, and hope. Through conscious detail, Paulson successfully integrates positive learning experiences about survival in nature into a believable story that is well suited for younger readers.

crashed plane. By placing Brian in a situation that demands quick-thinking, Paulson is showing the reader how a courageous person responds to a dangerous situation.
Brian is a "city kid" who has suddenly found himself outside his element. The reader can gain tremendous insight on survival skills from this story, including fire building, creating a shelter, and reading a compass as well as learning the importance of carrying a first aid kit. For example, for the first few days, Brian eats berries and drinks water from the lake. However, Brian is driven by his hunger and is forced to think of ways to get food. He eventually makes a spear in which he could catch fish and other small animals. Brian also begins to set up a camp for himself.
