Rites of Passage in the Rastafarian Culture

A rite of passage is a ritual or ceremony signifying an event in a person's life. Usually, this event is representing the transition from one stage in life, on to the next stage. Most cultures celebrate special ceremonies from the transition of adolescence unto adulthood. The Rastafarian cultures, rites of passage are celebrated much the same way as they would in the United States. The Rastafarian movement began in Jamaica, mid 1930’s. Rastafarians are members of a Jamaican movement based on Christianity. According to Rastafarian belief, the only true God is the late Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie. After the birth of new born, the child is blessed by the elders in his family in a Nyabingi session. Birth is seen as a rite of passage for the Rastafarian people. Birth signifies entrance into the world, and beginning of a new person, therefore, reincarnation is also a belief of this religion. The whole Rastafari belief is based on an interpersonal relationship with one and everything around ones self.
