Robert E. Lee

For some Robert E. Lee is an almost God like figure. For others he was unreasonable. Robert E. Lee was born January 19, 1807 in Statford, Virginia. Robert was the fourth child of a Revolutionary war hero.

Robert was accepted to the United States Military Academy and graduated 2nd in his class. Although he had achieved an incredible academic record, he had not received the first demerit as a cadet, which as of today still has not been touched.

Following his graduation, Lee was given a commission as an engineer. He helped build the St. Louis waterfront and worked on coastal forts in Brunswick and Savannah. During this time he married Mary Custis, the granddaughter ...

Colonel Lee was sent to capture radical abolitionist John Brown and his followers. After the uprising by Brown and his men, it only took Lee 24 hours to capture them. Eight days later Brown was found guilty and hung. Brown's actions confirmed the south's fears and when Abraham Lincoln was elected President, many southern states seceded.

Politically, Robert E. Lee was a Whig. However, he was strongly attached to the Union and the Constitution. When Virginia withdrew from the Union he resigned two days later so he could fight in the Confederate Army.

General Scott asked Colonel Lee to take command of the United States Army to stop the rebellion. However, Lee offered his expertise to the newly elected President of the Confederate States. Davis accepted Lee and Davis made him a General.

General Robert E. Lee's most incredible victory was at Chancellorsville.
