“Mexican Is Not a Noun” by Francisco Alarcon is a poem of few words that is full of imagery and relatable verses. The poem begins with a statement, “‘Mexican’ is not a noun or an adjective” (Alarcon 1). My understanding is that the poet is trying to say that “Mexican” is not a thing or something used to describe something, it should not be objectified. Instead I think that the poet wants to show that “Mexican” is a movement, a unison of people who have come together through pain and suffering. poem by Mark Halliday is a poem that was an enjoyable read. I think that in this poem the character finds safety and solitude while he is in the library. He describes 3 scenarios that occur outside of the library, all in his mind while he sits in the library. It is unclear to me whether these could be from the past or what may come in the future for him. The first scenario, “... Illegally dumping bags of kitchen garbage … a very pissed-off worker … picking through my garbage and finding yogurt-stained and tomato sauce-stained envelopes with my name and address on them” (Halliday 2). I interpreted this as him doing something to anger someone and is now feeling guilty about it. The second scenario though, is a bit different. “ I am not leaning on the refrigerator of a young female colleague chatting … I imagine she may suddenly decide to do sex with me while her boyfriend is still away” (Halliday 13).
