Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter is about a young beautiful woman, Hester Prynne, who comes to Boston from England. While living by herself, waiting for her husband to move to the New World, she becomes entangled in a love affair with the town’s pastor, Author Dimmesdale. After committing adultery, Hester bears a child. She names her Pearl because she was, as it were, purchased at a great price. As punishment for her sin, she is forced to wear a scarlet A on the bodice of her dress. Afew years pass by, and one day Hester’s true husband, Roger Chillingworth returns. Pearl in scarlet as a second symbol, and wears the scarlet A long after she could have removed it. All these things are proof that she was trying to hide nothing. Hester’s salvation lies in truth.
Adultery also led to Hester having psychological consequences. She experienced much shame and guilt. As one of her punishments for her sin, she was forced to stand on a public scaffold while she was made fun of by her peers. The scarlet A followed her around everywhere she went. People would see that and would recognize that she was an adulteress. Loneliness and rebellion were other consequences of her actions. Dimmesdale, her secret lover, would not confess to the sin and kept the unknown father a mystery. Hester stood on the scaffold, along with Pearl, alone. There was one incident in the plot in which Pearl asked Dimmesdale if he were to stand on the scaffold with them. He refused and said,”another day.”
