It is said that living under the standards and beliefs of society is a constant battle. Whatever you may do or don't do, society will always have the last word on your actions. Shaming and or judging you for your mistakes, beliefs, weaknesses, and failures. Author Nathaniel Hawthorne expresses this idea in the book The Scarlet Letter. In this story, he describes how Hester Prynne has a battle between herself and the Puritan society. To the Puritan society, this is seen as a sin that should condemn her in both life and the afterlife, thus making her wear the scarlet letter to expose to everyone her sin. As the ruthless chatters continue on, Hester comes to accept her faith and the consequences she will now face with the scarlet letter. The Puritan's pitiless judgment has pushed Hester to the verge of herself. "She clutched her child so fiercely to her breast, that it sent forth a cry; she turned her eyes downward to the scarlet letter, and even touched it with her finger, to assure herself that the infant and the shame were real.
