To call Scotland's relationship with England contentious would be nothing but accurate. The two countries have a history together that dates back centuries. England has conquered, Scotland fought back to gain independence, and it seems to a merry go round. There were four main `disasters' in the 1690s that led to economic turmoil for Scotland. These years were also known as the ill years for Scotland. The first disaster was the famine of 1695 to 1700. "In 1704 James Hodges, who was an agent for the Country Party leader, the Duke of Hamilton, actually claimed that the English tried to starve Scotland out during the famine." The belief that England was trying to starve Scotland did not help the idea or push for Union with England among the Scottish people. Another disaster was the failed attempt to colonize Darien, which was "a poorly executed scheme by the Company of Scotland trading to African and the Indies to establish an entrepot for the West and East Indies".
