Sheldon was born on September 25, 1930. This was right during the time of the Great Depression. His dad was an immigrant and his mother came from a working family. His father owned a bakery with Sheldon’s Uncle Jack. Since the bakery was doing so well in the 1920’s they decided to upgrade. This was at the beginning of the depression when they didn’t know the economy was going to plummet downward. This caused financial stress on the family. Sheldon didn’t grow up with money and envied those that could afford the five cents candy. He grew up saying that once he had money he was going to buy as many books as he could. Sheldon’s father always wanted him to follow in his footsteps and take over the bakery. He tried to force Sheldon to work in the bakery while he Sheldon was in high school.
