In between the 7th and 10th centuries, Muslim Arabs and Persians immigrated to a region of the African coast that eventually became Somalia. These immigrants set up numerous trade sites along Somalia’s gulf and the Indian Ocean. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Somali Warriors joined the Muslims and their forces against the Christian Ethiopia. World powers such as Britain, French, and Italy took interest in Somalia and its trading advantages. The British had an opportunity when the Egyptian forces who had been occupying Somalia pulled out to engage with the Mahdi in Sudan.
