St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

St. Jude is a non-profit organization based out of Memphis, Tennessee. It allows children to get medical treatment for things such as leukemia and other catastrophic diseases that ravage the child's health and well-being. Throughout the years, St. Jude has built many strong relationships with hospitals and charities throughout the nation so that they can best serve the needs of the entire family. Danny also founded the American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC), which is the fundraising organization of St. Jude. Memphis was selected as the site for the hospital at the suggestion of a Catholic Cardinal, Samuel Stritch, who was Danny Thomas' spiritual advisor. Even though Danny is a Catholic he did not set up the hospital as a Catholic hospital, but rather a secular institution. Danny founded St. Jude on the idea that "No child should die in the dawn of their life" (Shrineofstjude.org). The groundbreaking for the hospital began in 1960. The hospital itself was designed by Paul Revere Williams and officially opened on February 4, 1962, in front of a crowd of roughly 9000 to 10000 people.
