The first stage in the bildungsroman genre is most always an emotional loss or period of awkwardness. Holden experiences this when he loses his brother Allie when he is very young, the death sends him into mental spiral that causes awkwardness and depression. this novel is a perfect example of a Bildungsroman novel.

The first stage in a Bildungsroman novel is an emotional loss or a period of awkwardness. Holden experienced this when his brother Allie passes away. In the book it states that the night Allie died Holden slept in the garage and broke all the windows with his bare hands(Salinger39). This shows that Holden is very upset about his brother and sends him into a state of depression and confusion. In the novel it states that whenever Holden is leaving someone or something or they are leaving him he needs to have a proper goodbye in order to feel closure(Salinger4), Holden never got that goodbye, the novel states that Holden was in the hospital the day of the funeral and hates to go to the grave yard(salinger155), Holden never got to say goodbye to Allie properly so he can never move on. Even to this day Holden experiences depressing and even suicidal thoughts, he was even supposed to be psychoanalyzed(Salinger39) but never was, ...
