In Julius Caesar, one of the main characters, Brutus, centered his interests and actions solely around “the good of Rome”. He used his authority and abilities to do what he thought was necessary to make his home a better place for the citizens that lived there. He ignored his emotions and feelings towards people and focused on his passion and what he knew was right. These are the basic traits of a person who practices stoicism. Stoicism is a philosophy that was developed around the early 3rd century by the Stoics that emphasized maintaining a personal will that coincides with nature. I’ve been put into several situations were I’ve had to battle back and forth with what I knew was right (nature) and my feelings. One example of those situations would be when my sister snuck out from the house to go party. I knew she was on restriction and that she just wanted to have a little fun, but I also knew that she’d stayed out well past the time that the party ended.
