"You look hilarious!" I said to my best friend, whose green shirt poked out from beneath her frock. "That hat doesn't even sit on your head right!"
We giggled and the vice principle glared at us, threatening with her eyes.
"Face forward," she shouted out to the class. "You're all going to march single file," she said, emphasizing her last two words. "You will stop at the foot of the stage and wait until you hear Principal Walker call your name. Then you'll step up on stage and quickly receive your diplomas. Shake the principal's hand before you go and smile out into the crowd-I'm sure your mothers and fathers will be waiting for you with their cameras. This is a big day!"

This is it, I thought. I made it. Twelve long, hard years of grueling grade school. I struggled at times, I breezed by at times, and for the most part I really didn't like dragging myself into school day in and day out for 180 days each year. I walked about two blacks every morning to where the bus would pick me and my best friend up, and we'd sit there for the twenty minutes it took to reach the imposing, windowless school. My mom was usually well on her way to work by that time; her shifts started earlier and earlier as I grew older. When I was in sixth grade I remember she was able to drive me to school on her way to work. By the time I was a junior in high school, mom had to start her car engine at 5:30 AM. When I got home from school at 2:30 she wasn't even there yet. Her commute was twice as long as mine was and she probably ate hardly anything all day long.
