The authors begin by discussing the way multinationals enter emerging markets and become the giant that potentially can take all the business, while smaller companies would seem to be at a disadvantage. The larger companies have many powerful resources and other advantages. At the same time, small companies often thrive, and researchers have studied how they accomplish this. Small companies that succeed at home in spite of competition from the giants do so by adopting a strategy that bring their assets into line with the characteristics of their industry and the advantages ...

use of low-cost materials found at home, allowing them to undercut competitors in other countries. They may have a particular expertise on which they can draw. They may have developed the ability to serve idiosyncratic or hard-to-reach market segments, and this may work well in another country as well. The more they can find markets like their own, the more they will be able to make good use of the strengths that have served them at home and that will now allow them to compete globally in spite of now having to face much larger companies. If their business is tied too strongly to the local economy and will not travel well, they may have to alter their business model and even their product in order to have a global reach. The potential exists and needs only to be properly developed.
