The play by Susan Glaspell, Trifles, and Zora Neale Hurston�s story �Sweat� tell about a period in history when women were not treated equal to men, and women lived oppressed and lonely lives. Men dominated almost every aspect of their life and women were of little importance. Throughout this era, the gendered roles place the woman in the kitchen, baking bread, canning fruits and jellies. When speaking to the female characters in Trifles, the author shows that the men make an assumption that the women get their identity from them and talk down to them. For example, Henderson tells Mrs. Peters that she is married to the sheriff, therefore, she is married to the law. Mrs. Peters, over the course of the play, discovers a different aspect of her identity that relates more closely to her experience as a woman than to her marriage. Mrs. Hale surmised that women �all go through the same things. It's all just a different kind of the same thing� (Glaspell 919).
