H1N1 is usually defined as the 'Spanish Flu' of 1918, which killed over 50 million people around the world. Flu viruses are named by the mutations of the neuraminidase and hemagglutinin. Neuraminidase is a hydrolysis enzyme that breaks down glycosidic bonds. The neuraminidase coating on the influenza virus surface like spikes enables the virus to chemically break through the cell walls so it can move on to other cells and replicate itself. By doing so, it invades the cells effectively. Therefore, flu requires special drug chemotherapy that attacks specific viral targets and activities.
